Plymouth, Michigan
Shearer Cemetery is located at the top of a steep hill in a small, thickly wooded patch of land between a private home and an apartment complex. It is very easy to drive right past the cemetery without even seeing it. The cemetery signs are quite small, and offer little contrast between the lettering and the background, making them hard to read.
The cemetery has long been closed to new burials, and was abandoned and forgotten for many years. In 2009, students from the local high school cleaned up the cemetery as a school project. Pathways were cleared and spread with wood chips, brush was cut back and flowering shade plants were installed. There is already heavy re-growth of shrubbery and accumulation of some downed tree limbs. Only the main pathway is really still visible.
The west entrance to the cemetery is the easiest to find. There is a very steep rocky slope with a wooden handrail. It is much easier to climb up than to descend. There is another, less visible entrance at the east side of the cemetery. The slope is slightly less and it easier to exit the cemetery on that path, although there is no handrail there.
The local historical society reports that some of the graves at Shearer Cemetery were relocated to Riverside Cemetery in 1956. Several of the headstones for those who were relocated remain at Shearer Cemetery. Only three of the remaining headstones are still upright. The rest lay flat on the ground, and most are broken. All of the headstones that could be located in this cemetery in October 2011 have been photographed and uploaded to the memorials.
