Bishop Floyd Begin, was entombed there after having been moved from his original burial site at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Hayward. He now rests in a section reserved for bishops of the Diocese of Oakland. The marble-fronted crypts of that section are backlit so that they glow from within.
The mausoleum has a capacity of 882 single and double crypts and 1,850 single and double cremation niches. There are both marble-fronted and glass-fronted niches.
The mausoleum entrance is a ramp that descends from street level and stops at a space just below the altar upstairs in the Cathedral. The Cathedral floor surrounding the altar is made of translucent glass and forms a skylight to allow light to flow down into the mausoleum.
Oakland's former Cathedral, St. Francis de Sales, which was damaged in the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake and was thereafter condemned and razed, provided some of the decorative materials for the new Cathedral. The catafalque in the mausoleum (a table for placement of the casket or cremation urn) was created from St. Francis de Sales' white granite altar.
Also salvaged from St. Francis de Sales are a crucifix and six stained glass pieces depicting various saints.
