The last burial in this cemetery was made over 70 years ago. Over the years the cemetery has grown up with saplings and briars, making it impossible to walk through the cemetery or find the tombstones. For many years livestock had open access to the cemetery, causing many of the tombstone to be broken or knocked over. During the 1990's this cemetery was cleaned up by a group of people who had family buried here. In 2003 another clean-up was done resulting in the cemetery being in very good shape. However, in 2011 the cemetery is growing up in briars and saplings again because there is no active group to keep it maintained.
Directions to reach Neal Cemetery:
From Huntsville, take State Highway 74 West for about 7 miles. You will see Madison County Road #7555 turning to the right; do not turn here but stay on Highway 74 for about 3/4 mile further. Take the second dirt road on your right which crosses a cattle guard and goes up a very steep hill. This dirt road is not a county road, but is only a driveway leading to the cemetery and fields. The cemetery lies just at the top of this steep hill on the right. (If you see County Road #7465 which turns to the right, or Highway 294 which turns to the left, you have missed the road leading to the cemetery and you need to go back about 1/2 mile).
