Although it is sometimes assumed this was a church cemetery because of its location next to what once was the Episcopal Church, it has always been a village cemetery. The church was not started up until 1868 and formally established in 1873. A decade later it closed for lack of members. Spring Grove's earliest known residents were Joseph Bliven and his son-in-law Joseph Rice and their families who arrived in 1841. Bliven established a grist mill here while Rice started up a hotel. The town was platted in 1845, Bliven died in 1846 at age 60 and may have been the first occupant of the cemetery, and in 1847 the Bliven's Mill Post Office was established. The town population remained very stable for many years until it was caught up in the recent stampede to the exurbs. Now there are subdivisions springing up on all sides. The cemetery contains many members of the Hoffman family, at least some of whom were probably originally buried on the family farm. The stone for Herschell Rice is simply a memorial. The boy died a decade before the family came to this county and is not buried here. No records remain to identify any other burials that may have been made here. In the absence of records, lot numbers assigned here are made in accordance with the current location of the stone. There is no way of knowing if any of the stones have been moved at some time in the past. With two exceptions there have been no known burials since the 1920s and the cemetery is no longer active.
