Located in the Bessie Township; legal description: NE/4 of Section 34-11N-17WIM
A half mile east of Bessie, OK
Sexton: Matthew Goeringer
John Bolinger and his wife Julia Jung Bolinger and deeded 3 acres of farmland to Evengelist Lutheran Friedens Yurend .
The original cemetery and church were located 1 mile west of the present location. Founded in 1893, the original church building was a sod dugout that was destroyed by a tornado on March 28, 1901.
In 1895, the church was moved to its present location. A wooden church building was constructed. This building was later known as the German School, is where many kids in the church took their catechism class.
1895 saw the first burial(s) in the new cemetery. Two of the founding members of the church, Johann Phillip Frick and George Wilhelm Koch, who were murdered on October 18th, 1895.
Later, three graves that were in the old cemetery, we moved to the new cemetery. Like the old cemetery at Shelly, there are no burials that remain in the old cemetery.
In 1906, the landmark church building was constructed to replace the original wooden church. The Landmark church was replaced due to structural issues that arose from having a 60' bell tower in the strong western Oklahoma winds, along with a bell that weighed 1,790 pounds.
In 1941, the current brick building was constructed to replace the landmark church building. The bell purchased and cast in 1907 for the Landmark church is still in use to this day.
The tradition of ringing the bell during a funeral for each year of a person's life, is no longer done. The only remnant of that tradition is the tolling of the bell while the funeral procession moves from the church to the cemetery.
