It mandated the eventual organization of the Cumberland Street Methodist Episcopal Church. The cornerstone for the building was laid in April, 1873 and in October of the same year, the building was dedicated. In 1875, the church had to rebuild after a fire destroyed all but parts of the lecture room wall and floor. The congregation and school continued to grow steadily from its founding until the early twentieth century. Membership began to decline in the early years of the twentieth century and persisted until 1973, when the Union Tabernacle Presbyterian Church merged into the congregation to form the Union Tabernacle Presbyterian Church. Since, the building and its adjacent parsonage have been home to Urban Worship Center, an Assembly of God-affiliated congregation.
The church contained a receiving vault for interment of its members. contained a receiving vault for members. It was used to temporarily hold the remains of members that were being buried at other cemeteries, or when the ground was too frozen to open a grave. Entombments listed in obituaries and records as being made in the vault were most likely intended to be nothing more than temporary, and most if not all final interments occurred elsewhere at cemeteries like Mount Peace, Cedar Hill and North Cedar Hill, Northwood, and elsewhere.
