Samuel and Mary Hamilton came to Germania Township, Todd county, in 1879 having applied for a homestead on the west half of section 4. They were the second family in the township.
In 1885 Mr. Hamilton's father, Johnathon Hamilton, had been visiting a son-in-law at Pillager and was on his way back to Kingston, Minnesota, when he became ill at Aldrich, Minnesota, where he died at the hotel on August 18, 1885. He was buried on the farm of a Mr. Armstrong on the railway right of way a half mile from the station. In 1897 the railroad required the grave to be moved, so the body was taken up and buried on the Hamilton homestead.
It was at that time they decided to reserve three acres for a cemetery and proceeded to lay it out in lots, 64 lots each 12' X 24". Johnathon Hamilton was on the north end of lot 2,range 1.
The cemetery lies 2 rods north of the center of the road in the S.W. ¼ of Section 4, Township 132, Range 34. It is 50 rods from the S.W. corner of the section to the east side of the cemetery which is listed as 162 feet wide from east to west and 270 feet from north to south.
On September 5, 1899 he went to Long Prairie to the courthouse and registered his declaration of reserving 3 acres for the cemetery, at the same time a loan was being made on the place.
I'm sorry to say when I was down to Long Prairie to the courthouse a few years ago they refused to look it up for me. It would seem the county should be interested, as after all, it is part of the county's history.
