The cemetery was originally named the Saltillo Cemetery but after the railroad went through and Saltillo business was further down the road it was re-named the Old Saltillo Cemetery.
When the wagon trains were traveling through in the 1800's on the Old Jefferson Rd located near by it wasn't unusual for people to die after the long trip either from old age, disease, or new babies that didn't survive. Some of those people are also buried in this cemetery but the wooden markers that were originally placed there rotted and the graves were lost over the years.
Daniel Henderson Agee and John A. Arthur 3rd were among the first settlers and owned adjoining properties and the Old Saltillo Cemetery land and the Old Saltillo Methodist Church land belonged to one or both famlies and was donated by one or both families however the first church was built by Daniel Agee's family in the 1870's.
The Agee family is still very active and take great pride in the cemetery and church.
The cemetery is a beautiful cemetery that is extremely well maintained and now contains approximately 1200 to 1300 gravesites. Many thanks go to the Agee family as well as all the wonderful volunteers that donate time and energy to this project.
