Daniel Routt who died 3 August 1849 is the earliest known / marked burial. His wife Mary died just three months later on 4 November 1849 and is buried next to him, as is their son Thomas (1802-1858).
The land on which the cemetery is located was originally purchased by Benjamin Harrison in 1839. He died in 1865 in the Civil War and he with his wife, Nancy W. (McHaney) Harrison Sugg Steele and many of their relatives, are buried in the cemetery.
Since there is no charge for burial plots, the only source of funds for mowing and the repair of many old stones is through the generous donations of those interested in the upkeep of the cemetery.
