This cemetery, its land deeded in 1949, belongs to Our Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic Parish, which is based in nearby Seaford, Sussex Co., DE at the church complex on Stein Highway and School Lane.
Our Lady of Lourdes Cemetery serves as the final resting place of many Catholics, and their family members of sometimes other faiths, from throughout Sussex Co. and nearby parts of Maryland. For over half a century, until late in 2002, it was the only Catholic cemetery in Sussex Co. Therefore, buried herein are a number of decedents who were residents of well beyond the immediate Seaford-Blades-Laurel area, though most at rest here lived, at one time, in one of those towns or close by.
This part of DE, and nearby MD, having had only a miniscule Catholic population prior to the DuPont Corporation coming to Seaford during the late 1930s, a great many individuals (perhaps the majority) buried in the cemetery, particularly those dying prior to the 1990s, hailed from out of state. Many were foreign-born.
Two graves of special interest in the cemetery are those of the founding pastor of Our Lady of Lourdes Parish, Father Daniel M. Power, and that of the first individual interred in the cemetery, baby Robert J. Cannon (died 1950). See their memorials.
Despite what a published history of Blades article states, this cemetery was not established in 1956.
