There is a difference of opinion among Clinton County historians as to when Davis Chapel Church was founded and by whom. Nevertheless it is generally accepted that it was one of the first churches in the county and the first of the Methodist denomination.. Some believe its origins date back to 1835 or earlier. Some believe it was founded by Rev. Jacob Young, others by Rev. Absalom Davis. At some point a cemetery was established on the grounds, which is known as Davis Chapel Cemetery. No written record seems to exist of the burials as they occurred or in what year burials began at this location.
In his book, Rocks of Ages (1999), Gary Denton Norris noted that the earliest known burial in this cemetery occurred in 1850, that there were 869 total graves, comprised of 742 known graves and 127 unknown graves. As this cemetery is still receiving burials the numbers have since increased but Mr. Norris's figures give us a general idea as to its size and the number of unknown or unmarked graves.
