This cemetery is located on land donated in 1822, by Rufus Nicholson to establish a Baptist Church on Bayou Sale. The donation was accepted by Baynard C. Robert and Michael Gordy, Commissioners of the church. {St Mary Parish Book B, page 73, #192}- as per Margie Luke, Historian & Archivist, St. Mary Pa., LA.
South Bend has been ravaged by vandals, severe storms, and by time. It also is now, and for many years, without maintenance so stands as is but refuses to fade away completely. It is a testament to history during a time of opulence and also civil strife. Although a church was never erected on the site and services at that time were held at the home of ministers, the cemetery was used for many decades by families living on lower Bayou Sale. Many of them had ties to the adjoining Sugar Plantation with the same name of "South Bend" which for many years was owned by the Hudson family. The plantation was originally established by Francis Hudson and later, his son, Benjamin F. Hudson. It remained in the family for a time after the Civil War but was later divided and sold which probably contributes to the condition of the cemetery and it's lack of maintenance. Any pictures of this cemetery in it's entirety are long lost or have yet to surface but pictures of the remains of crypts and graves in their current conditions are being added as obtained. Thanks go to Margie Luke, a lifetime resident of this parish, for records of most of the interments, the cemetery history, and some of the pictures. Thanks to Judy Graham also for pictures of this cemetery.
NOTE: NO NEW PHOTO REQUESTS PLEASE - What remains of this cemetery has a photo. There is nothing else to photograph so please do not submit requests that no one can fill as most gravesites are no longer identifiable as such.
