The cemetery is just across the river from Freeport, Armstrong County, Pennsylvania, and a lot of people from Freeport are buried here. Some people reading obituaries could mistakenly believe that Brookland Cemetery is in Armstrong County due to the large number of people from Freeport buried here. I saw one obituary that said "Brookland Cemetery, Leechburg" which is also incorrect.
Directions. If you are in Freeport, take Route 356 east across the river, go up the long hill. After it flattens out somewhat, you will be in the area where you can see the Allegheny Presbyterian Church on the left. Turn right on White Cloud Road. Go perhaps an eighth of a mile, and then turn left onto the asphalt road into the cemetery.
The Apollo library has a reading of the gravestones; this reading was last updated in 2004. Some of the information in this summary was taken from this report. I took the time to count the number of marked graves in this report and came up with 975. Looking at the report, the burials go back at least to the 1830s and continue through today (2009).
The old section of the cemetery is in the rear, and is mostly on a fairly steep, round hill. The new section is at the front of the cemetery, and is less steep, but not exactly flat either.
A marker of Civil War interest has been placed in this cemetery:
BILLY SHAFER
BORN A SLAVE, DIED ON HIS WAY TO FREEDOM NEAR HERE, AT THE HOME OF REVEREND ROBERT REED, A STATION ON THE "UNDERGROUND RAILROAD."
[Cemetery description by Alan Saltsman in April of 2009]
