Add PhotosThis is not the Nicolaifriedhof, located just north and north-west of the Nicolaikirche. This is the church itself, that used to be a burial place for a few notable individuals.
Some previous churches at this location were repeatedly destroyed by fire and the effects of war. Still, the oldest foundation walls can be traced back to around the year 1100. St. Nicolai church was the only parish church in the city until 1372.
The foundation stone for today's building was laid on May 15, 1452, but no further construction was carried out for more than half a century. The construction work at St. Nikolai was instead concentrated on St. Peter's Church. In 1515, wealthy citizens took over the church and donated to its construction. The consecration then could take place on May 8th 1520. In 1642, the building was destroyed by fire during the Thirty Years' War and was later restored by 1649. After another fire in 1717, it was rebuilt with a wooden, illusionistically painted flat ceiling. A roof turret was built in 1786.
The Nikolaikirche has no longer been a parish church since the early 16th century. The bigger St. Peter's Church attracted religious life to itself. So the Nikolaikirche was primarily a burial church. The Nicolaifriedhof surrounding it is one of the most beautiful cemeteries in Germany.
Before the First World War, the Gothic building was once again endangered. After the war the church was profaned and in the year 1925 converted into a memorial for those who died in the First World War.
