Add PhotosBuilt in the beginning of the 17th century to serve as a family chapel for the Carvalho e Melo family, ancestors of the Marquis of Pombal, it served as the parish church of Mercês, Lisbon, from 1652 to 1835 (the seat of this ecclesiastical parish was moved to the church of the Convento de Nossa Senhora de Jesus in that year). In this church once stood the family grave of the Marquis of Pombal (1699-1782), where the Marquis himself was interred after being moved from Pombal in 1856 until 1923, when he was finally moved to Igreja da Memória, also in Lisbon. The church was abandoned and sold to a private buyer in 1942, who sold it the next year to the Police. It was transformed into a police station in 1943 and the body of the church disappeared. It was demolished years later to make way for a housing building. It is unclear if the remains of the family members of the Marquis of Pombal were moved to another place or if they stayed in the family grave.
