Add PhotosAt this site near the end of the twelfth century, Gilbert, or Gille Brigte, of Strathearn and his wife Maud d'Aubigny established a priory dedicated to the Virgin Mary and John the Evangelist, burying their son Gilchrist there in 1198. Held by the Augustinians, the priory was converted to an abbey around 1220 and was patronized by the Scottish kings and by the earls of Strathearn. The ruins of the abbey are now on private property but can be seen from the road (C460).
