Opened in 1784 the cemetery at the rear of Southcot House on Lyncombe Hill served the poor of the central Bath parishes of Abbey (St. Peter and St. Paul) and St. James. It was associated with the nearby Abbey and St. James Poor House, but most of the burials were of parishioners unable to pay the fees charged by the other available cemeteries. The majority of the 5500+ burials at this site came from the parish of St. James. Although located in Widcombe the burial ground, like the workhouse, did not serve the Lyncombe and Widcombe parish.

In 1849 an extension was consecrated in a newly purchased plot of land at the top of the site. At this time, local press reports referred to the burial ground as "Old Orchard".

The cemetery closed in 1857. The triangular, wooded plot of land can still be seen below Forefield Place. There are no memorials in-situ.
