Dave Davisson and John MacBain collaborated in the research. We are indebted to Paul Goode, Doug Williams, and Patty Robinson of the Seal Township Office who were able to find some remnants of fence wire buried in the leaves; no headstones were visible until they probed and unearthed 3 unlabeled fragments of headstone slabs.
The cemetery was located by the WPA in the 1930's. It was later catalogued for the Pike County Genealogical Society and submitted to the OGS, but at that time the PCGS could not locate the cemetery. The WPA and PCGS offered different rough location descriptions. Once one comprehends that St. Route 124 in the 1930's (and even as recently as 1953 when Patterson Heights was platted) followed the path of today's Market Street, the two imprecise descriptions become acceptably compatible but still fuzzy.
The Seal Township team learned that a farmer had bulldozed a path into the woods from the east a half century ago, stopping when a headstone became visible. This is consistent with a small pile of dirt which, as per the fence wire found, would be at the eastern edge of the cemetery.
The cemetery is located approximately 220 feet NE of the water tank which is located at the end of Skyline Drive. The coordinates of the cemetery are 39 degrees, 4 minutes, 14 seconds N and 83 degrees, 0 minutes, 8 seconds W which appears to be in the NW corner of the Patterson Heights Subdivision as originally platted. The cemetery has a beautiful view over the Scioto River. The site measurements are 30 ft. by 15 ft. as per the WPA, and remnants of fence wire on two sides are roughly compatible with this. The WPA mapped the cemetery as having 16 gravesites.
The WPA registered only veterans' gravesites. In the Cissna – Patterson #2 Cemetery, the only registered gravesite is for Charles Cissna, Feb. 12, 1783 to March 7, 1827. The WPA registration card documented that he had a vertical headstone, and his plot was the one in the NW corner. We are not aware of any other burials, although it is likely that Charles' wife, Dorcas Woolcott Cissna (dod 1835), and their son Evans Cissna (dod 1835) are buried here.
The cemetery is located in Seal Township, Pike County, Ohio, and is # 9841 (Cissna Cemetery / Patterson #2 Cemetery) in "Ohio Cemeteries 1803-2003", compiled by the Ohio Genealogical Society.
