Saint Peter's Basilica of Lima
Saint Peter's Basilica of Lima, built in the 16th century, by the Society of Jesus, is one of the most important religious complexes in Lima's Historic Center. It is administered by the religious order of the Jesuits. This basilica in Lima was originally dedicated to Saint Paul.
The present church, consecrated in 1638, is the third built on the site since the Jesuits constructed the first simple chapel in 1568. It is also the National Shrine of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The current church is the product of the importance that Lima was acquiring as a metropolis of Nueva Castilla and because the Jesuits longed for an architectural jewel that would be worthy of the order. They took the plan of the Church of the Sacred Name of Gesù, in Rome, as a model.
This basilica contains relics of dozens of saints, including three important Peruvian saints: Rosa of Lima, Francisco Solano, and Toribio de Mogrovejo. In the atrium was the old cemetery, proof of this is that there is a cross in the place.
