St Mary's Burial ground was a military and protestant cemetery situated on Papineau street . It was in existence between the years 1814 - 1869 (Military) & 1852 (Civilians - abandoned when the Mount Royal Cemetery was opened). The Montreal Anglican Garrison had also started to bury their deceased at the Military Cemetery on Île-Sainte-Hélène between 1829 - 1867.
Montreal had an urgent need to improve access to the Jacques Cartier Bridge, which had opened in 1930, and the closed cemetery stood in the way of a proposed ramp. In 1942, Ottawa sold the Papineau Rd. cemetery to the city for $35,000; the money would be used to help refurbish the National Field of Honour in Pointe-Claire and transport there such bodies and monuments that could be recovered. Nearly 1,800 soldiers and family members had been buried there since the cemetery opened in 1814. Nineteen bodies which could be identified, are memorialized at the National Field of Honour Cemetery (ID 1980168) in Pointe-Claire, Montreal Region, Quebec, Canada.
This cemetery was one of the early Montreal Downtown cemeteries.
