History of the Jenny Lind Cemetery:
Rev. Lars Paul Esbjorn emigrated from Sweden to Andover, Illinois in the fall of 1849, where he formed the first Swedish Lutheran Church in America, which became known as the Jenny Lind Chapel. During the winter of 1850-1851, the people began making bricks for their new church. In the spring the foundation was laid.
In the summer of 1852, boards which had been cut for the church steeple, were used instead for coffins for victims of the cholera epidemic.
Jenny Lind Cemetery is located in front of the chapel to the southeast. The monument for the Rev. Esbjorn family has the earliest date of death, July 11, 1852, that of the reverend's first wife, Amalia Marie Louisa Gyllenbaga. A tall pillar was undoubtedly erected at a later date.
There are most certainly many unmarked graves in the cemetery, some perhaps were marked but now the stones are long gone.
The last burial in this cemetery appears to have been in 1906.
