The remains of the hamlet lie 2 miles east of Lynton on the A39 Lynton to Porlock road, the Church is directly opposite the Blue Ball Inn(formerly the Sandpiper).
With a Grade Listing of II*, much(if any) of the original Church no longer exist. The 18/19th century rebuilds and addings include nave, porch, tower-dated 1836; The chancel, vestry, and north aisle added in 1846 were at the expense of Rev Walter Stevenson Halliday; slate roofs, font, 19th century pews, pulpit and readers desk.
A leaded sundial is above the entrance, showing signs of previously being painted in gold and black, is inscribed "TIS TIME TO SEEK THE LORD"
George IV painted coat of arms.
Mounted, carved wood and painted Prince of Wales Feathers dated 1863.
Payment of 8s.4d was the 1288 taxation of Pope Nicholas IV to finance the crusades.
Views of Countisbury Hill can be seen in the video of Mike and the Mechanics hit, The Living Years.
A ditty reads;
Whenever I see a little Church
I always pay a vist
So when it's time to carry me in
The lord won't ask 'who is it'.
Many Thanks to cousin Donald who undertook the labourious task to identify, transcribe and chart every memorial, the layout is displayed in the Church. ~ J.D
