Leavitt Hill Cemetery, also known as the Howe-Clark
Beyond the P Stevens "place at the top of Leavitt Hill is a cemetery where several Howes and Clarks were interred. Only four graves are there now. James Clark and his 3 sons, Arthur, Charles and Wm H. The Howe and Clark families came to Holderness in the early 1800's. The granite foundation opposite the Stevens place was the site of the first house. Later, a larger house was built across the road. Capt Peter Howe had charge of the construction of the first bridge at Little Squam Lake. His "accompt" of the cost and labor is on record. Leavitt Hill was aka "Pudd'n Hill". The first Jackson house was moved to Jackson Pond on sledges pulled by oxen, in winter. The route was incredible, down a steep incline, up a steep hill, over the Lambert Road, down the Winona Road to the Rollins' place, across the RR tracks. up the steep hill and down to the so called Jackson house near Jackson Pond. The Clarks built the original part of the house and lived there many years.
