In 1796 Oswald Leicester made a plea to the Bishop of Chester pressing for a chapel in Altrincham. After much correspondence involving various authorities and worthies of the district, Oswald was placed in charge to build a new chapel of ease in Altrincham, in the parish of St. Mary's Bowdon.
St George's Chapel was founded in 1799 with The Reverend Oswald Leicester as curate. As curate of a chapel, Mr Leicester could baptise and bury but not marry. The Chapel converted to a District Church in 1860 and then St George's became a Parish in its own right in 1868.
In 1873 works were carried out by James Cardwell builder of Altrincham, to strengthen and rebuild the upper portion of the tower as it is seen today.
In 1886 works were carried out to replace the earlier chancel with an enlarged and ‘fine' chancel.
In 1896-97 the nave was rebuilt, to a design by the Lancaster based architects Paley & Austin. The nave was demolished leaving the ten year old Chancel and the twenty three year old Tower standing. A new chancel was therefore formed, linked with the old Chancel and the Tower.
Apart from a minor part of the Tower from 1829 St George's Church today is Late Victorian.
The church is now a Grade II listed building.
