Kell's Grove Cemetery
Darien, McIntosh County, Georgia, USA
Location: From Darien, US Hwy 17 South, go 0.1 mile, turn left on Hwy 99 (Ridge Rd.) and go 1 mile. Turn right on Murray Townsend Rd. and go 0.3 mile. The Cemetery is in the woods on the right, about 135 ft.
History: John Kell (1784-1827 was born at Sunbury, Liberty Co., Ga. He married Margery Spalding Baillie (1794-1870) and owned Laurel Grove Plantation, just North of Ft. King George (source 2). The Cemetery began as a slave cemetery and some think that slaves from Black Island were also buried here. (source 11). Local residents who used a path which went past the cemetery say that there were a fairly large number of graves in it. A deed in McIntosh County Deed Bk. 3, p. 156 records the sale of a burial lot by John McIntosh Kell and other Kell descendants to Allen Gould on March 6, 1879. This lot (17' x 33') was "in the cemetery known as Plantation Graveyard of the Estate of Kell on the Grove Plantation." It,also, gave "right of way to the said cemetery, and free engress and egress." The plantation and cemetery became known as Kell's Grove.
The Cemetery contains many unmarked graves as most of the wooden markers have deteriorated. There were many gravewares in the Cemetery but some of these have, also, disappeared. Because of the thick undergrowth this is not a complete record of the Unmarked Graves. It was, also, difficult to accurately determine the exact shape and size of the Cemetery.
Recording began in the Northwest corner. Rows are West to East. Grave numbers are North to South.
