Barton Road Wesleyan Chapel, Barton upon Irwell also known as Wesleyan Methodist Church and Barton Wesleyan Chapel, and Barton upon Irwell graveyard on Barton Moss road, Barton on Irwell, Lancashire, England.
Church was located at OS grid reference SJ7651197836

The church has/had a graveyard.
Church History
It was founded and built in 1796. It is now closed and has been demolished in 2001 and 2002. The burial registers are held at the GMCRO (Greater Manchester County Record Office) ref L28/10. (thanks Mike for that info).
The Wesleyan Methodist church was formed in the 18th century from religious societies founded by John Wesley and his preachers. It suffered many secessions, but was the largest Nonconformist denomination in the 19th century. In 1932 the Wesleyan Methodists joined with the Primitive Methodists and the United Methodists to form the Methodist Church of Great Britain.
Recent info on Church and Cemetery is that it is now something else (the Maranatha Court block of flats). Alot of stones have been removed, and no one knows where those stones are. The graves are now a parking lot, with cars parked on top of them. Such a shame. There are people trying to record and acquire records, and I have many more people to add to this cemetery.
The controversy surrounds the development on the Wesleyan graveyard off Barton Road, which was bought for £75,000 in 2001 by property development company Abbotsound Ltd, run by Les Hampson. Promises were made at the time regarding the creation and upkeep of a memorial garden for the gravestones that Abbotsound needed to remove so they could build the flats and car park.
But many headstones were removed and allegedly recycled for Hampson's profit. Accusations also arose that headstones were moved around by Abbotsound during the development so that no graves could be reliably identified.
Mr Hampson said at the time: "No graves will be disturbed. There are one or two headstones that might be affected and we will do whatever the families concerned wish."
Hampson was also at the centre of a row in 2002 with Hope residents when Abbotsound bought property on Lancaster Road, and planned to convert the area into a halfway house rehabilitation centre housing single men. Local residents thought the plan would put children at risk.
The Cemetery still has the remains of 6,475 people and once had over 1,200 gravestones with such local families interred there as the Heatons, Shawcrosses, Bethels and Blears.
It is my understanding that there are 3 graves sections there, and now only part of #3 remains.
