Not to be confused with the current Mother of God Cemetery in Kenton Vale, just south of Covington. Located in the old Buena Vista community in the south end of Covington, this now defunct Catholic cemetery is located near the northwest corner of Madison Avenue and 26th Street. Some early references call this place St Joseph Cemetery, but it eventually became known as Mutter Gottes Kirchhoff. When that parish incorporated its new burial grounds in 1887 this site began being referred to as the Alter Mutter Gottes Kirchhoff the following year. Sporadic burials continued at this site into the 1890s as evidenced by Covington death records and Mother of God's parish records. The first few pages of Mother of God Church's interment records list the many victims of the 1849 cholera epidemic who were buried here. A notice in the Kentucky Times Star [Monday, Oct. 27, 1902, p. 3] mentions that All Souls Day will be celebrated the following Sunday at Mother of God Cemetery with services conducted by Father Tappert, and further states "The work of removing bodies from the old to the new cemetery is being accomplished steadily. During the past week, the remains of Revs. Fathers Froelage, Bush and Kuhr were transferred." Some of those once buried here have been removed to Saint John Cemetery in Fort Mitchell as well, though the remains of many individuals remain at Buena Vista to this day.
