This cemetery entry on Find a Grave comprises both the old Mayo Abbey graveyard and the new Mayo Abbey cemetery, which are adjacent. They are situated in the village of Mayo Abbey in County Mayo. The village is 5km south of Balla and 10km northwest of Claremorris.
Mayo Abbey is an ancient site, the location of an important monastery that was founded by St. Colman of Lindisfarne who came to Ireland in 668. The Synod of Kells named Mayo Abbey the seat of the Diocese of Mayo in 1152. In the 16th century, Mayo Abbey gave its name to the County Mayo. No physical remains of the earliest monasteries are evident onsite, but there are ruins of a church on the site which is thought to be the Augustinian Abbey of St. Michael founded here in the late 14thcentury.
The old graveyard is a layered graveyard that has been in continuous use for more than 1300 years.
The current church, St. Colman's Famine church, opened in 1845.
