From church history - Deerman's Chapel UMC.

The original church, established in 1820, was located just West of Steele on U.S. Hwy 11 in a community called Peckerwood Cove, named after Peckerwood Lumber Company where most of the community residents worked. When Camp Sibert was established during WWII, the original church was torn down. Evidence of the original log cabin church exists as the old church steps remain today out by the old cemetery off of Deerman’s Chapel Road. Members of Deerman’s Chapel United Methodist Church were given some land across Hwy 11. This is where the current church sits today. The current church was built in 19__ with only a sanctuary. In 19__, three Sunday school rooms were added to the back of the church. In 1978, Deerman’s welcomed the addition of the fellowship hall, which sits independently along side of the church. In 2001, a foyer, bathrooms, audio room and porch area were added to the church.
The original bell was sold to a family in Steele after the church was torn down. This family sold it to a church in Montevallo, Alabama. After many many years, the church bell was reunited with Deerman’s Chapel in 1980. In 2007, the bell was set in place above the church in its new steeple. The new steeple also sounds out chimes across the community on the hour, every hour. The chimes are an example of Deerman’s evolution with modern technology while preserving the history that is very dear to the community and the members of Deerman’s Chapel United Methodist Church.


So, there are two cemeteries in the community called Deerman's Chapel UMC Cemetery (where the new church was built) and the original cemetery down the road called Deerman Chapel Cemetery where the old church was torn down.

This had caused much confusion when Find A Grave contributors submit a memorial......often the grave is actually in Deerman's Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery and the submitter has posted it on the old cemetery just down the road (Deerman Chapel Cemetery.)
