The following comes from the Berks County Association of Graveyard Preservation, which describes the cemetery and its history:
Exeter Township: From Rt. 562, Jacksonwald, east on Oley Turnpike, 1.4 miles, then right on Ritter Lane, .3 mile. Cemetery situated on slight rise in field on left across from the soccer field approximately 150 yards from the road. Size: 47' x 47'
History: Descendants of this Ritter family have been involved continuously in the printing business here in Berks since 1797 when Francis bought stock in Der Reading Adler. According to MHBA, p. 658 John Ritter, son of Isaac, razed the original house of Isaac Ritter in 1862. The land was later bought by Adam Kutz. "The parcel of land on which the cemetery is located belongs to the descendants of the original Ritter purchases. An item in the deed of the farm on which it is located provides for its retention by this family of Ritters. In or about 1910, Jacob R. Ritter, (son of John and grandson of Isaac) to whose efforts its present excellent condition is due, had a law-suit with the owner of the farm, about its retention, and the item in the deed was sustained by the Court." (Ritteranna p. 43) This site had a very ornate stone wall and gate provided by the Ritter Family Association in the early 1900's. The wall is situated on an incline and collapsed in 1997. The walls were rebuilt by the Association in 1998. The total cost of the project was $15,700: $6000 from a Community Block Grant of $6000, in addition to descendant contributions and fund raisers of the B.C.A.G.P. The Exeter Ritters descended from Elias who emigrated from Germany to Maryland. His son John migrated from Maryland to Pennsylvania. Gravemarkers and inscriptions: Eight engraved stones and a number of initialed footstones remain. It is doubtful that any graves and/or stones were moved to Schwarzwald Cemetery. It is said to have contained the remains of a British general injured at the Battle of Baltimore during the War of 1812. For more information see MHBA, p.656+.
