Goodwater Missionary Cemetery

The Cemetery is near former church Goodwater Mission and its Indian accompaniment, Kunsha Seminary for Girls. The mission was established in 1837 by the and wife "". Five years later through the influence of the noted Choctaw tribal leader, Israel Folsom, The Kunsha Seminary for Girls, a Choctaw National School, was opened at Goodwater.
The Seminary for Girls had a top-recorded residency of 45 children plus 15 staff members and families before it was closed for all time during the War between states.
Sparse records can only be found at American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions which operated it for the Choctaw General Council.
Other found info:Goodwater Mission, 1837, the Rev. Ebenezer HOTCHKIN was superintendent in 1843. Miss Harriet MITCHELL as a teacher until she married Allen WRIGHT in 1857. Miss Sue L. McBETH was teacher in 1860.
In 1838 smallpox carried away between 400 and 500 Choctaws. Rev. Ebenezer Hotchkin, teacher in a girls' academy, wrote in May 1840, "We have had some sickness this spring. Intermittent fever, pleurisy, scurvy, worms, bots, lice, vermin, etc. But after we get through the old scurf and dirt, the little girls come out as bright as other children. To effect this change strong nerves are necessary."
