Approximately 75 yards from either road, a small cemetery about 150' by 150' square, situated on a low knoll completely surrounded by tilled fields and enclosed by cut stone posts with iron rails. The cemetery has been in a high state of disrepair until only recently, with nearly all broken, fallen, weathered and illegible stones. We understand that a local Boy Scout Troop recently renovated the site in 1987, raised many fallen stones and cleared out brush and briers and filled woodchuck holes. The State of NY Legislature has mandated that all abandoned cemeteries are to be renovated and maintained by local townships.
When gravestone records were copied Aug 23, 1951, the site was overgrown with bushes and trees; it was fenced in with iron pipes fitted into stone posts. Included are inscriptions taken in 1938 by the late Miss Harriett Calkins, a town of Sheldon historian. Some stones and inscriptions recorded in 1938 were not found in 1951.
The stones found by Miss Calkins in 1938, but missing in the 1951 recording, are marked by "(HC)."
