Presbítero Matías Maestro Cemetery (previously called the General Cemetery of Lima) is a historic cemetery located in the Barrios Altos (Cercado de Lima), city of Lima, capital of Peru. Inaugurated on May 31, 1808, it was the first pantheon in the city since previously burials were carried out in one of the different churches. It was named in honor of its designer, the priest Matías Maestro Alegría.
The cemetery was divided into three parts: atrium, chapel and the cemetery itself. Where the chapel preserved its classic models, it followed the model of the ancient temples, it kept the octagonal plan, as well as the marble checkerboard on which the eight-column baldachin that we can see today was raised.
Its 766 mausoleums and 92 historical monuments of the most refined architecture of the 19th and 20th centuries keep the remains of historical men and women of Peru, in addition to the monument Crypt of the Heroes (Pantheon of the Heroes), a mausoleum erected in honor of the heroes of the Pacific War (1879-1884).
