History Notes:
The parish of St. Andrew's has been a part of Grimsby since its founding in 1794. Andrew Pettit, a United Empire Loyalist, came to Canada in 1787, receiving a grant of land in Grimsby from the Crown. A devoted churchman, Pettit initially led services in his home until the first log church was built in 1794 on land donated by Colonel Robert Nelles. The log church was replaced with a frame church in 1804 and the existing church was built in 1819, the year of Andrew Pettit's death. It is in his honour that the parish is named.
Historical Plaque:
On this land donated by Robert Nelles, United Empire Loyalist, the pioneers of this community built a log church in 1794. It was replaced by a frame structure which was completed by 1804. The present stone church was erected 1819-25 and was consecrated by Bishop C. J. Stewart in 1828. The first three incumbents were the Rev. W. Sampson 1817-22, the Rev. A. N. Bethune 1823-27, and the Rev. G. F. R. Grout 1827-49. In this churchyard are buried many members of the Loyalist families who founded The Forty (Grimsby).
Erected by the Ontario Archeological and Historic Sites Board.
