Add PhotosThe sisters still maintain many of the original customs, however with time, things change. The sisters were originally buried in the place where they died. Currently the sisters are brought back to the Motherhouse. Our Lady of Angels is designed for sisters needing assistance and care. When a sister has passed away at OLA, she is laid out in a room for those wanting to pay their respects. At 4:45, the day before the funeral, the sisters gather for prayers and then proceed to the main Chapel with the deceased sister, praying the rosary. The funeral Mass begins at 11 am followed by burial in the Convent's cemetery. The last act of the service at the cemetery is the Sisters singing the "Ultima" which is sung in three part harmony. The Sisters, family members, and friends return to the Sisters' dining room for a meal.
The Liturgy of the Hours or Divine Office, often referred to as the Breviary, is the official set of daily prayers prescribed by the Catholic Church. It consists primarily of psalms, hymns, readings, intercessions, and other prayers. By the end of the 5th century, the Liturgy of the Hours was composed of seven offices or seven sets of prayer times. As a Community, we pray two of these prayer times together. When a Sister passes away, we pray special prayers during these times, which are called the Office for the Dead. We no longer pray them on the way to the Cemetery, but at our normal prayer times in Chapel.
A Requiem (or Requiem Mass) is a Eucharist service in the Catholic Church to remember someone who has died. There are special words for a requiem mass which were said in the Latin language. The best known part of the requiem mass starts with the words "Requiem aeternam dona eis, Domine" ("Give them eternal rest, O Lord"). This is why it is called a "requiem". Masses are now said in the local language and the term Requiem is not used. The Funeral Mass is still for the deceased person.
We no longer have Aspirants. Aspirants were young high school age ladies who boarded at the convent and attended high school classes taught by the sisters. It allowed the Aspirant to spend time with the sisters to discern if they were being called to religious life while gaining their high school diploma.
