The Friedhof Pankow III (Pankow Cemetery #3) is a non-denominational community graveyard, run by the city of Berlin, located in the Eastern Berlin district of Pankow, subdivision Niederschönhausen. It sits between Leonhard-Frank-Straße, Am Bürgerpark and Hermann-Hesse-Straße. The main gate is located at Am Bürgerpark 24, near the City-Train station (S-Bahn) Schönholz. With a size of 150,054 square meters (about 37 acres) it's the largest of all cemeteries in Pankow.
Some graves were relocated by requests of the families from the now closed cemeteries Pankow I (closed in 1974), Pankow II (2004), Pankow V (2007), and Pankow VI (1981). Places of interest on this cemetery are the Memorial Hall (Feierhalle), built in 1905, and the two memorial meadows for the Victims of the Nazi-Regime (Grabanlage für die Verfolgten des Nazi-Regimes) and the Memorial Gravesites for the Victims of War and Tyranny (Erinnerungshain der Opfer des Krieges und der Gewaltherrschaft). The later one is a war cemetery with the remains of 1374 people.
There are several numbered cemeteries in Berlin-Pankow, they are differentiated by Roman Numerals I-XII (1-12).
Please note that the graves in Germany are not perpetual. After a certain period of repose (20-30 years) the graves are being leveled and re-used. There is no toxic embalming being done in Germany, so the coffin and the corpse have decomposed naturally. If the family of the deceased decides to purchase another period the duration can be extended by another 30 years. War Graves are considered memorials and are kept up by the owner of the cemetery. Those are kept forever.
