The cemetery is rectangular, slightly truncated in the southwest, about 5.2 acres in area. 3.8 acres (1.6 hectares) were purchased in 1895 by the Rodney Cemetery Company. About the year 2000, the cemetery was expanded at the south end by 1.4 acres (0.6 hectares). The driveway from the entrance gate leads south toward the military cenotaph in the north centre. The driveway loop divides cemetery into centre (east and west of the centre line), and outside margins (north, east, south and west). The Extension at the south end is bisected by another driveway loop.
Rodney Cemetery has many monument types: spires, blocks, flat stones, etc. Stone orientation is mixed, so rows are sometimes not easily discerned. There are abt 50 inscriptions with death dates earlier that 1895; some are probably re-interments; others may be cenotaphs. Some graves that have been identified from obituaries or death records are unmarked.
Settlement of Aldborough Township started in the 1820s, but Rodney itself was founded with the building of the railroad through Elgin County in 1872. Prior to the establishment of Rodney Cemetery, local families buried their deceased in family cemeteries on farms, such as Paterson, Graham and McArthur or in cemeteries associated with churches, such as those in Churchville (Saint Peter, Saint Henry, Calvary), or even further away.
The West Elgin Genealogical and Historical Society has published a cemetery transcription, last updated 1999. An on-line version (lacking the index diagrams) is accessible at https://elgin.ogs.on.ca/ancestor-indexes/cemetery-transcriptions/aldborough-rodney/
