Jonathan Anderson was born in Kentucky in 1798 and emigrated to Texas in 1819 with his first wife, Nancy Whetmore (or Whetstone). He was given land near Carthage Texas and lived about 4 miles southeast of Carthage until he died in 1890. He was thought to have been the oldest resident in Texas at the time.
When it was decided to create Panola County out of what was then a larger Shelby County, "Old Shelby" donated 100 acres for Panola County if Carthage was chosen as it's county seat.
Jonathan was a veteran of the Texas War of Independence. And received land for his services to the Republic. He served at the Siege of Bexar and the Battle of San Jacinto.
The cemetery is maintained by the Anderson Cemetery Association, which comprises of those related to those buried within. For over 100 years the family has held a reunion and cleanup day every June which is now a reunion, lunch, and meeting.
