Illinois, only a few rods from the Adams County line and about a mile from the
Pike County line in Section 30, Buckhorn Township. In 1958, it was reached thru
a field from the south. The east-west public road about a city block north of it is
closed. It is on a crest of the north slope of a hill that overlooks Ferguson Valley
– a beautiful spot with tall pines swaying among a few oaks. There is a good
fence around it with a large gate on the north and small gate on the south. It is in
two parts, the older section, a square acre set aside by Samuel Bowman as a
burial ground, and the other half acre was to have been a site for a church and
hitching ground. If this acreage was deeded to the public, the deed was never
recorded in the land records of the county.
The church never materialized, even tho the cemetery was a popular burial
ground. It has always been a public cemetery, where burial space is free. The
only requirement has been a donation for the upkeep which holds in 1973,
despite high prices and taxes.
