Walt was born in Okmulgee, Oklahoma and came to California as a boy. He was an accomplished trumpet player and singer; and received music degrees from the University of California at Santa Barbara and Columbia University in New York City.
Before and after serving in the Army in the Korean War, Walt was a music teacher. He spent 38 years of his long career with the Mt. Diablo Unified School District. He also enjoyed playing trumpet with the Diablo Symphony and the Contra Costa Musical Theater orchestras.
He spent many years as choir director of the First Christian Church in Concord and then, until the later stage of his illness, was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church in Concord, serving as a deacon, elder and choir member.
A Memorial Service for Walt will be held at First Presbyterian Church, 1965 Colfax Street in Concord on June 26 at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Parkinson's Institute, 1170 Morse Ave., Sunnyvale, CA 94089-1605; Kaiser Hospice, 1425 S. Main, Walnut Creek, 94596-5300; or the charity of choice."
