BREMOND, Texas Bremond High School students are remembering a classmate who passed away before some of them were even born.
Jason Yancy died 15 years ago playing football against Milano.
And Friday night Milano and Bremond are playing their first game since the tragedy.
A special tribute is planned for the game.
The Bremond High School Football Team is playing with a purpose as they remember a classmate who died playing football in October 1999.
16-year-old Jason Yancy, number 77, collapsed in the huddle during the first half of Bremond's game at Milano, dying on the way to the hospital due to an enlarged heart.
His teammate Chester Rekieta tried to catch him as he fell.
"He just kind of collapsed backward into a full seizure you know, medics came out and took a while then took him of the field," said Rekieta.
During halftime Chester and his friends found out their friend didn't make it and the game was cancelled.
"He was such a jovial guy, just the first one to congratulate you, first one to come up to you and tell you good job or first one to tell you hey forget about it let's go to the next play," said Rekieta.
Fred Wilganowski is a math teacher at Bremond High and one of Yancy's former football coaches.
"Jason was such a good kid and he was nice to everybody and he was the kind of kid you would want to remember and so we have," he said.
These two teams have scrimmaged one time since Jason died and the Tigers are hoping to bring a win back here to Bremond.
Current athletes like Defensive Tackle Jarvis Jones plan to "play like he would", with heart.
"It's a very emotional night but when we step on that field we're gonna do what we do best and play good football and we always know that Jason will always be in our hearts," said Jones, a Bremond High School Senior.
Bremond ISD Superintendent Daryl Stuard, says more than 450 shirts were sold in Bremond and Milano for the Jason Yancy annual college scholarship fund.
"That's what I love about small towns. You know towns like Bremond, towns like Milano they all pull together and when one's hurting they're all hurting," explained Stuard.
A loss this close-knit community won't forget.
